Ministry of Energy of Russia awaits in 2018 Mongolia's decision to supply electricity from Siberia
The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation expects in 2018 the decisions of the authorities of Mongolia on the possible supply of electricity from power plants from Siberia instead of building hydroelectric power stations on the largest tributary of Lake Baikal - the Selenga River
This is reported by TASS on January 31 with reference to the deputy head of the department Andrei Tcherezov."Our proposals regarding the construction of the lines to the Mongolian side are presented, they should give feedback [...] I think this year there will be some information from Mongolian colleagues where we will understand where we are going in this direction," message of the deputy minister.
According to the agency, earlier the company "Rosseti" offered to supply electricity through transmission lines from generating capacities in Siberia to Mongolia, which is experiencing energy shortages.
In September 2017, Mongolia canceled tenders conducted in 2016 for the development of a feasibility study and an environmental impact assessment of the Shuren and Orkhon hydroelectric projects. Such measures were taken after the consultations held in spring 2017 in Buryatia and the Irkutsk region. Then the residents of the regions spoke out against the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Selenga River and its tributaries in Mongolia.
In October, Irkutsk scientists said that the construction of facilities on the main water tributary of Lake Baika would lead to a decrease in the population of valuable fish species, in particular, Baikal omul, sturgeon and whitefish, as well as degradation of floodplain soils and vegetation.
